How AI Is Changing Visual Content Creation - That Is Helping You Directly With Your SEO
AI is reshaping both search results and content production. This article looks at how YouTube, Instagram, video carousels and AI-assisted production are changing SEO.

Visual content creation goes well beyond uploading a video to YouTube and waiting. YouTube matters, Instagram matters, Shorts and Reels matter, and the shift connecting all of them to search rankings has been building for the past 18 months in a way that the SERP data makes hard to ignore.
Some numbers from structureddata.co.uk comparing April 2025 to July 2026 on desktop:
- Video carousels: 1.39% → 31.53% (2,168% increase)
- Video results overall: 34.65% → 58.1% (67.7% increase)
- AI Overviews: 8.51% → 42.09% (394% increase)
- Featured snippets: 3.39% → 0.22% (collapsed 93.5%)
Google is replacing text answers with video answers and the SERP tracking data from structureddata.co.uk confirms it is already well underway.
YouTube Is Not Just a Video Platform – It’s Also a Direct Traffic Source
Do you know YouTube processes over 3 billion searches a day? How much of that are you getting?
Ahrefs calls it the second-largest search engine on the planet and they are being polite about it because in terms of actual search volume it is probably closer to the first for anything visual, instructional, or entertainment-related.
But the SEO angle goes further than YouTube's own search bar.
If you look at the Semrush data it tells the whole story.

YouTube's AI visibility sits at 66 worldwide, humongous, with 5.4 million mentions across AI platforms. Sounds like family treatment honestly. Google AI Overviews cite YouTube. Gemini cites YouTube. ChatGPT browses YouTube transcripts and references them in answers. The platform is not just ranking in Google search results, it is being treated as a primary source by every major AI system simultaneously.
83% of the videos that appear in Google's video carousel come from YouTube according to Perficient's video ranking study. Pages with embedded video are 53 times more likely to reach page 1 than pages without, and video results pull 41% higher click-through rates than text listings.
If Google's relationship with Reddit is a girlfriend situation, then YouTube is the sister. Reddit gets the attention and the drama and everyone has an opinion about it. YouTube quietly gets cited by everything, ranks for everything, and collects the traffic without anyone writing think pieces about whether it deserves to.
Instagram Is Ranking in Google and That Changes the Conversation
A lot of SEOs still file Instagram under "social media" and keep it in a separate folder from search work, which is a mistake at this point.

- Authority Score 74 and is getting organic traffic 136.2 million.
- AI visibility scores 61 worldwide with 3.4 million mentions.
Top cited source on the platform is instagram.com itself at 563,500 mentions, which means Instagram pages are being referenced by AI systems as source material at a scale that puts it alongside YouTube and Wikipedia.
After 2024 if you guys look at the traffic graph on both platforms the picture is clear. YouTube surged. Instagram surged. The inheritance of search traffic went to a small group and the members are YouTube, Instagram, Reddit, and Wikipedia. Quora used to be in that circle but it feels more like the step-offspring Google tolerated for a while and is now slowly walking out of the room.
When you post a Reel on Instagram you are doing SEO whether you meant to or not, because Instagram pages rank in Google, Instagram Reels show up in video carousels, and Instagram profiles rank for brand queries. The line between social media marketing and search engine optimization stopped existing the moment Google started counting these platforms as trusted content sources.
If Google Is Not Favoring Your Website, Stop Pouring Water Into a Leaking Bucket
If she does not like you, it does not matter how much you do for her, she is not going to love the effort. You can bring flowers every day and she will smile politely and put them in the bin when you leave.
Google rankings work the same way for a lot of sites right now. You publish content, you build links, you fix technical issues, you run audits, you optimize Core Web Vitals, and nothing changes because Google has decided that for this particular query it would rather show a YouTube video, an Instagram post, a Reddit thread, and an AI Overview that summarizes all three.
If your website is struggling in organic search, putting even 10% of that same effort into video content on the platforms Google keeps putting up in results will feel like flying on a magic broom compared to the crawl you have been stuck in.
Video content on YouTube competes against other YouTube videos. Your website competes against Reddit, Instagram, YouTube, Wikipedia, Forbes, and the AI Overview all at once. The competition pool on video is dramatically smaller for most keywords because the majority of your competitors have not started producing video yet.
AI Is Throttling Your Website Traffic and Creating Your Videos at the Same Time
AI Overviews went from 8.51% of desktop searches in April 2025 to 42.09% in July 2026. Those AI Overviews are answering the queries your blog posts used to rank for, reducing clicks to your website, and sending your organic traffic sideways.
At the same time, AI tools can generate video content, edit footage, create thumbnails, produce captions, and build visual assets that would have needed a production team 3 years ago.
The same technology eating your website traffic is handing you the tools to produce the content format Google is giving the space to. For the last few uploads we have been running the raw recording through CapCut and a ChatGPT video editing tool to get the cuts and captions done, then a free AI image generator and Canva for the thumbnail, and the whole thing takes under an hour where it used to take an afternoon. Custom thumbnails alone boost click-through rates by 60 to 70% on YouTube according to multiple studies, so the thumbnail step is not optional.
Find Which Video Platforms Google Is Actually Ranking and Work on Those
Search your target keywords. Look at what shows up. If the first page has a video carousel, note which platforms those videos come from. If YouTube Shorts are appearing in the results, that is a format signal. If Instagram Reels are showing up, that is a platform signal. Google is telling you directly which platforms it trusts for which types of queries, you just have to check the SERP instead of staring at the analytics dashboard.
For informational how-to queries, YouTube dominates. Over 55% of how-to searches show a video carousel and the vast majority of those videos come from YouTube.
For visual and lifestyle queries, Instagram is climbing fast. Product searches, fashion, food, travel, design, anything where the image is the content rather than a supplement to text.
For local queries, Google Maps and Google Business Profile still lead but video reviews on YouTube are increasingly showing up alongside those results.
If Reddit has been banning your accounts or throttling your posts, stop fighting that particular battle. See what else Google is giving the space to and put your energy there instead.
Videos With the AI Label Are Getting Buried
Videos that carry the AI-generated label in YouTube and Google are being deprioritized in search results based on what we have seen across the projects we have worked on.
(This is my observation based on the projects we have worked on, not a confirmed Google or YouTube ranking policy.)
A fully AI-generated video with synthetic voice, stock footage, and no human element performs measurably worse in rankings compared to one where a real person shows up on screen, even briefly.
Do Not One-Shot Generate Videos and Publish Them Raw
Put effort into the prompts. Add real audio, your voice or licensed music. Show your face for at least part of it, even a 5-second intro. Do crops, add text overlays, insert cuts between sections. AI does 80% of the production work and you do 20% of the finishing, and that 20% is the difference between a video that ranks and one that gets buried.
Google has been getting better at identifying fully synthetic content across text, images, and video. Use AI as the production engine, add enough of yourself that the output does not get flagged, and the content performs. Skip that step and the rankings reflect it.
Where Your SEO Effort Should Actually Go Right Now
Google moved the furniture. If you are still optimizing exclusively for text-based organic rankings and treating video as a separate department, you are optimizing for a SERP layout that is shrinking every quarter while the video and AI Overview real estate keeps expanding.
Video production used to require budget, equipment, editing skills, and time. AI took care of every one of those barriers. The platforms Google is favoring right now are visual platforms. The tools to create content for those platforms are free or close to it. And the number of competitors you are up against in video search is a fraction of what it is in text search because the adoption curve has barely started.
The SEOs who figure this out and start producing video as part of their search strategy, not their social strategy, are going to hold SERP positions that text-only competitors cannot compete for. And the longer everyone else waits, the harder those positions get to take.
